Sustainable Industrialization: Fostering Innovation, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Access to Affordable Energy

SDG 7SDG 9SDG 12

November 20, 10:00–13:00
Hall №1

Session

The UN Sustainable Development Goals play a key role and set clear guidelines for global and regional cooperation within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), as they are directly linked to economic development, technological progress, and environmental challenges.

The general trend is a steady growth of investments in energy, transport, industry, and the digital economy. SDGs 7, 9, and 12 become catalysts for integration processes within the SCO, contributing not only to achieving global sustainable development goals, but also to strengthening regional cooperation.

All three SDGs are closely interconnected:

  • developing sustainable energy (SDG 7) is essential for the functioning of modern infrastructure (SDG 9);
  • optimising power systems (SDG 7) increases production efficiency and resource management (SDG 9);
  • efficient smart infrastructure (SDG 9) promotes the adoption of sustainable production models and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12)..

The session will serve as a platform for exchanging experience and developing joint solutions to strengthen regional integration through the prism of sustainable development.

Discussion Issues

  • The role of states in addressing development challenges to achieve SDGs 7, 9, and 12, and the impact of artificial intelligence and robotisation on achieving technological progress in the SCO Member States
  • The impact of innovation on the development of sustainable industrial infrastructure, and the adoption of new technologies in the construction of transport and communication networks to strengthen industrial potential and accelerate industrialisation
  • Ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy sources, including through increasing the share of renewable sources and improving energy efficiency
  • Transitioning to sustainable resource use models to reduce waste, adopt eco-friendly technologies and circular economy principles, and increase consumption and production efficiency
